What is a Waldo Reads! Little Library Steward?

A Steward is a LVWC (Literacy Volunteer of Waldo County) volunteer who is given responsibility for overseeing one or more Waldo Reads! Little Library in their local community.

The primary role of a Steward is to care for a Little Library so that it becomes and continues as a vital and engaging resource for the neighborhood and community.

We encourage Waldo Reads! Little Library Stewards to:

1. Monitor the integrity of the Library itself, its contents and the overall reputation of the Little Library movement.

2. Care for your Library by keeping the Library orderly, well stocked and overseeing repairs when necessary.

3. Promote and inform the local community about the project and the exciting Little Library movement!

Responsibilities and Guidelines for Stewards:

  1. Ensure that the Little Library under your stewardship is adequately stocked with books on a regular basis.
  2. Select books for stocking, varying selections by genres, levels of reading ability, and age and gender of readers of readers.
  3. Avoid censorship in selecting books, leaving book choice for children the responsibility of parents. In book selection, use good, common sense following the general guidelines of the American Library Association. *Please read the American Library Association guidelines below.
  4. Keep a record of the number of books that you deposit in the Little Library.
  5. Provide periodic reports of the quantity of books deposited as required by the WCLV little libraries coordinator.
  6. Provide basic maintenance for the Little Library, such as minor repairs and cleanliness. For repairs beyond your ability, contact the Little Libraries coordinator (prdoc@verizon.net) or the Literacy Volunteers of Waldo County coordinator (dpendleton@rsu71.org) for assistance.
  7. Be responsive to the comments and/or suggestions of library users and those hosting the Little Library on their property, taking remedial action when necessary.
  8. Be an advocate whenever and wherever possible for the WaldoReads! Little Libraries program and literacy in general.

* The American Library Association affirms that all libraries are forums for information and ideas, and that the following basic policies should guide their services.

I. Books and other library resources should be provided for the interest, information, and enlightenment of all people of the community the library serves. Materials should not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.

II. Libraries should provide materials and information presenting all points of view on current and historical issues. Materials should not be proscribed or removed because of partisan or doctrinal disapproval.
